TITLE: FLAG

A short story about the idea of the flag

The origin of the flag is unknown. In antiquity, signs or standards on the ground were used in warfare that could be categorized as flags. This originates in ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia.

Flags, as they are known today, made from a piece of textile fabric representing a particular entity, were invented in the Indian subcontinent or the Chinese Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BCE). Chinese flags depicting colorful animals and royal flags had to be treated with a similar level of respect attributed to the ruler. Indian flags were often triangular and decorated with accessories such as the tail of the collar and the state tent. These uses spread to Southeast Asia as well and were transmitted to Europe through the Muslim world, where plain colored flags were being used because of Islamic predictions.

In Europe, during the High Middle Ages, flags began to be used primarily as heraldic equipment in battle, making it easier to identify a knight than just from heraldic equipment painted on the shield.

The use of flags outside the military or naval context only begins with the rise of nationalist sentiments by the end of the 18th century, although some flags date back to earlier times. The flags of countries such as Austria, Denmark or Turkey emerged from the middle of the legend while many others, including those of Poland and Switzerland, were raised by the heraldic emblems of the Middle Ages. The 17th century saw the birth of several national flags through revolutionary warfare. One of them was the flag of the Netherlands, which appeared during the 80-year Dutch rebellion which began in 1568 against Spanish domination.

Political change and social reform, allied to a growing sense of nationality among ordinary people, led to the birth of new nations and flags around the world in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The oldest flag found in Iran is the Bronze Age Standard Shahdad, found in Shahdad, Kerman Province, dating back to 2400 BCE, made of bronze. It features a man sitting and a woman kneeling in front of each other, with a star in the middle. This iconography can be found in other pieces of Bronze Age art also in the area.

The country with the oldest flag in the world is that of Denmark. The Danish flag, named Danneborg, dates back to the 13th century AD. It is believed to have existed since June 15, 1219 although it was officially recognized as the national flag in 1625.
