TITLE: INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY FOR ENERGY ENGINEERING IN COGENERATION AND RENEWABLE ENERGY

Time: 12-18 July

SUMMER ACADEMY PLAN

The main goal of the international summer academy for energy engineering is co-production or cogeneration which is a very efficient system of energy production as, simultaneously, during the generation process, electricity and thermal energy at the same time from the primary energy. This primary energy is usually obtained by burning fossil fuels such as gas or oil.

Energy can also be produced through renewable sources (solar, wind, geothermal, hydraulic) and in that way we would not harm the environment and they are inexhaustible sources.

What we know about when it comes to producing energy, from any source, is that we need to have energy efficiency. This way we will benefit from few resources and will be able to generate plenty of energy and quality. One high efficiency system used today for energy production is Cogeneration.

For this purpose, the preparation for this Academy aims at a better understanding of co-production and investment in renewable energy, which in Kosovo is the main consumer of electricity, firewood and district heating services.

A particular importance in this process has the advantage of cogeneration, in addition to its high energy efficiency, is that both the heat generated and the electricity can be used in a single process. Conventionally, a power plant for electricity generation and a conventional boiler for heat production would be required. Cogeneration takes place in places close to the point of consumption, and this is why changes in electricity voltage, long-distance transport and better use of energy are avoided. In conventional power grids, it is estimated that they can lose between 25 and 30% of the electricity generated during transport.

Analyzing the above information, we can note the main characteristics of cogeneration. It can take advantage of the different types of energy generated so in this way it has a much higher performance potential than a conventional hub. Here helps us a little Environmental Sustainability. Although they are not renewable energy sources, this helps us use less fuel for the process, so fewer raw materials are used. This also reduces production costs and leads to increased competition for manufacturers. Finally, it helps us in environmental sustainability as the lower the fossil fuel consumption, the less impact it will have on the environment. By producing energy in places close to consumption, it also saves on raw materials and space when producing the infrastructure for its transportation. So as we can see it has a lot of benefits.

Referring to cogeneration, we will also discuss the Cogeneration Project that has been implemented in order to improve the central heating system for the residents of Prishtina, through the delivery of hot water from the Kosovo B Power Plant.

Benefits of the Cogeneration Project are as:

  • Ensuring of heating stability
  • Reduce of operational costs
  • Cleaner enviroment
  • Opportunities of network expansion and new connections

So as it can be seen, it is a capital project for the citizens of Prishtina which will have thre phases:rehabilitation, cogeneration and network expansion.

Also in this Summer Academy priority will be given to profitability and how useful cogeneration is:

  1. Benefits for the country and society. We find primary energy saving by using less fossil fuels. Emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere are reduced and regional development is created by promoting job creation.
  2. Benefits for the user who is committed to co-production. Greater efficiency and reliability of energy production which complies with environmental regulations. The price of the electricity bill is lowered, thus reducing production costs. There is a higher quality in the energy process and therefore competition has increased.
  3. Benefits for the electricity company that supplies. The costs of transmission and distribution of energy are avoided because it is consumed close to the place of generation. And they have a bigger planning difference in the electricity sector.

Based on a theme, obviously the Academy has been developed for those who have an interest in the energy sector and the important part which is cogeneration. Furthermore, the program is designed for those aiming to pursue an academic or professional career related to energy. This course aims to equip students or graduates, technicians as well as investors who wish to receive a comprehensive presentation in the energy engineering sector. In addition to the theoretical part, the workshop is ideal for all those who are already working in this field and need to deepen their knowledge. The summer school thus brings together participants from a wide range of professional and academic backgrounds.

Participation in the UBT 2022 Summer Academy helps increase competencies while combining practice and knowledge that will help their future careers.

CALL FOR APPLICATION

Join the 2022 Summer Academy to enhance competencies as you combine practice and knowledge that will help you in your future career.

TARGET GROUPS

Based on the characteristics of the sectoral levels of TERMOKOS, KOST, KEK, KEDS, KHMI, target groups and stakeholders belonging to the spheres of different activities and disciplines: from the fields of the traditional and renewable energy sector, the field of the sector of communication technology (internet), the field of environment, up to the field of research and education and community work (eg professors-students), including the need for these essential areas for the development of daily life. The overall objective for all participants is to develop knowledge throughout the process of the Summer Academy program cycle in the field of energy engineering.

POSSIBILITY OF THE QUALIFICATION PROCESS AND CRITERIA

All participants who have 50% of participation in the summer academy will receive a certificate of participation in Energy Engineering on the topic: Cogeneration and Renewable Energy, UBT International Summer Academy 2022. At the end of the summer academy a study visit in the industry sector will be organized and the design of seminar papers and participants carrying out the papers will receive the certificate of completion with 2 ECTS. For UBT students, these credits can replace a course (elective course), based on the student’s grade point average at the time of ECTS equivalence, with the Dean’s and commission decision for the relevant subjects.
