TITLE: SUMMER ACADEMY INTEGRATED DESIGN “ Wabi – Sabi ,,

Wabi – sabi is an elegant philosophy that shows a more connected way of life – where we are connected to nature, and thus, more connected to our inner self.

Wabi-sabi is a concept that pushes us to constantly seek beauty in imperfection and to accept the most natural cycle of life. It reminds us that all things, including us and life itself, are permanent, incomplete, and imperfect. So, perfection is impossible and permanence is the only way.

Individually, wabi – sabi are two separate concepts:

Wabi is about recognizing beauty in modest simplicity. It invites us to open our hearts and detach ourselves from the vanity of materialism so that we can experience spiritual wealth.

Sabi is concerned over time, the way all things grow, age and rot and how she looks beautiful in objects. She suggests that beauty hides beneath the surface of what we actually see, even in what we initially perceive as broken.

Together, these two concepts create a comprehensive philosophy for life itself:

Accept what it is, stay in the present moment, and appreciate the simple, transient stages of life.

Characteristics of wabi-sabi aesthetics and principles include asymmetry, rudeness, simplicity, economy, rigor, modesty, intimacy, and appreciation of natural objects and forces of nature.

Richard Powell, summed up the Wabi-Sabi philosophy in the most appropriate way:

“Wabi-sabi feeds everything that is authentic by accepting three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing ends, and nothing is perfect.”
