TITLE: Summer Academy of Media and Communication

The summer academy organized by the Faculty of Media and Communication is organized within the Global Ubt Fest 2022, which UBT has been organizing for several years now. The Summer Academy comes in various forms to discover new ways of educating media and communication planning and to work out a critical approach to media development today. Its purpose is to be the connecting point between the two kinds of knowledge; technical knowledge of the media (“processed knowledge”), and “personal knowledge,” based on the experience of the participants, which are fundamentally different. Based on these, the Academy works to define a common platform, where media goals for the development of society can meet the interests of individuals, illustrating different scenarios where goals converge.

The Summer Academy creates a space in the academic research of Media and communication, which tries to flatten the hierarchy between student and professor, and to support enthusiasm as a virtue. With a great aim, the Summer Academy excludes non-engaging research methods, imposed by the university system for profit, refusing to use a beneficial and highly clinical language, expressing with conviction that the line of thought that that kind of approach promotes, eradicates any kind of creativity and independence. Therefore, in order to have a more productive approach, the Summer Academy has insisted on the fact that a lively and imaginative approach to the research process should be considered as a very noble pedagogical aspiration.

At the end of the academy the participants will be able to:

  • see the media as a process where the journalist is a facilitator of the process
  • understand the role of the media in guiding dialogue towards a goal and timeline
  • become part of the media appearance of society by helping to determine intellectual and ethical criteria
  • see themselves as equal in decision-making as ideas belong to the group and are openly debated between equals
